Effective heating, cooling and ventilation for leisure facilities

Effective heating, cooling and ventilation for leisure facilities

Sports halls have specific requirements due to ceiling height, variable occupancy and use rate of equipment. This means planners should favour a versatile and flexible climate solution.

This post explains how a decentralised ventilation system can generate an optimal level of thermal comfort in all seasons and improve indoor air quality in a gym, while limiting its operating, service and maintenance costs.

The technical challenge of heating, cooling and ventilation

The configuration of an indoor sports building is often complex because of its varying requirements for thermal comfort and indoor air quality. Parameters include:

  • the climatic zone in which it is located
  • the surface and height of the building
  • its capacity
  • the number and location of different indoor spaces (reception, activity areas, changing rooms, shower/sanitary, offices, technical rooms)
  • the type of sports practised
  • the weekly and hourly occupancy rate of the building

The main challenge in providing efficient and economical thermal comfort lies in the variation in the occupancy rate of the premises. For example, peaks in attendance must be considered.

Sporting events can attract many people and there is an obvious requirement to provide changing rooms with showers for athletes.

Planning the ventilation system

Whether a new construction or a renovation, the project will also have to be sized while considering the regulatory requirements of energy and environmental optimisation. By integrating all of these requirements, the planner will ideally choose an eco-efficient heating, ventilation, and cooling solution, technically compatible with each other, versatile and scalable

As such, the choice of the ventilation system is a key step that can largely contribute to the energy efficiency of the building.

Our advice is to use as a reference base 60 m³/h of fresh air per athlete and 20 m³/h of fresh air per spectator. Ideally with automatic regulation of the system according to the schedules and the level of occupancy of the building.

What HVAC systems are usually recommended for gyms?

Depending on the size and purpose of the building, gymnasiums are usually equipped with a centralised HVAC system, most often running on a gas boiler and heat emitters such as radiant panels. The ventilation function is provided either by a double flow monobloc box (hygienic air renewal but without recycling), or – for the most important buildings – by an air handling unit or by a rooftop system allowing heating, cooling, and ventilation by mixing the air.

Hoval decentralised ventilation systems: the eco-efficient, versatile and flexible solution.

Both new and renovated buildings now have new criteria for comfort and energy management, respectful of the environment and the health of the occupants.  Gymnasiums and sports halls are unique in that they are different from one establishment to another. This means each project requires a solution capable not only of adapting to all types of energy generators but is also multi-functional to provide heating, cooling and ventilation.

Four good reasons to choose a Hoval dual-flow decentralised ventilation system for a gym or sports complex

  1. It is a decentralised and "3 in 1" HVAC solution, combining heating, cooling and ventilation
  2. It ensures an excellent level of indoor air quality and a constant hygienic supply of fresh air. Since the air flows are introduced separately within the heat exchanger, impurities and odours from the extracted air are directly evacuated to the outside.
  3. They allow the recovery of energy and therefore savings
  4. Because Hoval are a specialised manufacturer

For high-rise halls (ceiling height > 6m), Hoval decentralised ventilation systems are an ideal alternative to conventional ceiling ventilation technologies and combine all the advantages.

Hoval decentralised ventilation system

  • Ductless System - reduced number of appliances
  • No pressure drops, patented ultra-efficient air diffuser Air-Injector
  • Cost efficient (due to the absence of ducts and the reduced number of appliances
  • Operating costs reduced by energy recovery
  • Differentiated control zones (different set temperatures depending on the activity areas)

Functions and composition of Hoval decentralised ventilation systems for gymnasiums

Hoval's "3 in 1" decentralised solution is complete and versatile. It performs multiple functions:

  • Heating or heating + cooling
  • Energy recovery (double flow): energy savings
  • Air recycling
  • Introduction of essential hygienic fresh air
  • Extraction of stale air
  • Filtration of fresh air, recycled air and stale air
  • Destratification
Two complementary and independent families of devices make up Hoval's decentralised ventilation systems. Depending on the model, they are equipped with the patented Air-Injector air diffuser and provide heating and/or cooling of high-rise halls:

  • RoofVent  - One-piece roof ventilation device with an energy recovery function, ensures the introduction of fresh air, extraction of stale air, air filtration and air recycling.
  • TopVent  - High-efficiency water or gas air heaters with high-efficiency air diffusion. They ensure air recycling, or even depending on the model, air filtration and hygienic fresh air supply.
